Joe Biden is a member of the Democratic Party and serves as the 46th President of the United States. Previously, he served as the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017 and as a U.S. Senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009. His presidency began on January 20, 2021.
Biden was born in Scranton and grew up in New Castle County, Delaware. After earning a law degree from Syracuse University, he began his political career as a New Castle County Council Member in 1970. He was elected to the Senate from Delaware in 1972, becoming the sixth youngest senator in American history. He opposed the Gulf War in 1991 but supported NATO’s integration of Eastern Europe and intervention in the Yugoslav Wars. He approved the Iraq War but opposed increasing the number of U.S. troops in the region in 2007. He chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995 and played a significant role in the enactment of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act and the Violence Against Women Act.
In the 2008 presidential election, Biden was elected Vice President under Barack Obama and served in that role until 2017. During his vice presidency, he oversaw infrastructure spending to combat the Great Recession and helped pass several major pieces of legislation. Biden also played a role in international matters, such as the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq and military intervention in Libya. In January 2017, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Obama.
Joe Biden married Jill Biden in 1977. He was previously married to Neilla Hunter from 1966 to 1972. He has children named Hunter Biden, Ashley Biden, Beau Biden, and Naomi Biden.
